My Story

Hello!  I’m Kelly Hedlund.  Welcome to my blog.

I love absolutely anything that involves the creative mind!  If I can make it, build it, craft it, or decorate it myself, I will.

I adore projects and usually, much to the dismay of my husband, have several going on at once.  I call this going into “Project Mode”, and I go into project mode a lot!  It just makes me really, really happy.

And it makes the house a big mess.  Hence Hubby’s apprehension.

This blog started in 2014 when we moved to our current home.  Basically, this is when I finally got my act together and actually started documenting my projects.  The idea itself had been stirring for a while.  I have forever been in awe of all those DIYers out there, wholly appreciating what they post on the internet, because frankly, I use it.  All of the time.  I began to realize that I should do the same–share my experiences–so I too could help someone out there looking for a creative idea.

To tell you more about the girl behind the blog, I am born Floridian (very rare, I know) who pretty much spent her childhood swimming in a pool or playing Barbies, but I’ve lived in Charleston, South Carolina long enough now to feel like this is home.  I absolutely love my city.  I love that I get to drive over a bridge every morning on the way to work, and the lowcountry never quite looks at the same as the day before.  I love the South and all its friendliness.  I love that my children think nothing of responding to their name being called with “Ma’am?”

I am a total girly girl.

My hubby thinks that maybe I am not so girly because I have learned to use tools.  But he is wrong.  One does not simply lose the girly because they happen to pick up a power tool.  I use them because I want to get something done, but don’t think for one second that they don’t secretly terrify me.  Because most do.  I like to refer to myself as the Miter Saw Queen because it makes me feel brave.

Besides being addicted to projects, I am also addicted to (in no particular order, but usually together) Pinterest and Dr. Pepper.

I love pajamas and hate bras, so I tend to look as socially unacceptable as possible when in my own home.

I am one of those people who freaking adores a bath in lava-like temperatures.  I take one almost nightly. When my children were babies, I’d take them in the bathtub with me and basically cook them.  They love hot baths now too.

I wake up happy, and I am in bed by 8:00 pm.  I fall asleep listening to Arrested Development or The Office most nights.  I pretty much have certain episodes memorized.

I believe laughter is good for the soul.

And absolutely nothing is more important to me than my family, so let me introduce you to them now.

Meet my hubby.

Kelly Hedlund | My Creative Happy

I met and fell in love with this fellow when we were nineteen and twenty respectively.  In 2002, we married, and I can honestly say, it has been an awesome fourteen years!  He is my best friend; the sweetest, funniest, most genuine person I know.  He makes me so happy.

When Hubby isn’t cooking the best shrimp and grits in Charleston, tinkering on his boat, or checking out the latest posts on the Key West Boat forum, he’s out in the backwaters slaying the red fish (his true passion).  But every once in awhile, I can convince him to join me in tackling some DIY project around the house!  I love working with him, love that he indulges my whims when he’d rather be relaxing, and love that no matter how hard the task at hand becomes, we are always able to get in some laughs!

Drew Hedlund | My Creative Happy

In 2004, we had our first son.  Then in 2009, our second son came along.  We refer to them as Version 1.0 and Version 2.0.

This was very strange for me, because you see, I was supposed to have daughters.  I don’t know.  Somehow that memo was lost on the powers that be.  So now, instead of being surrounded by Barbies and all things pink, I am surrounded by Legos, trains sets, and Nerf gun bullets.

Lots and lots of Nerf gun bullets.

Oh, and two boys who absolutely, wholeheartedly adore their Momma.

I’ll take it.

It is for them I create a beautiful home.

Up until now, my creative happy place has always been in my heart, mind, and home working on a project surrounded by the people I love most.

Now I get to share that happy place with you!  Welcome.
